Best Phil Bombs in a Dew, ok. Jerry fanning like crazy at the end, ok... Its easily a top 10 version...

But I just don't think it is possible for a post 74 Dew to hold the title of best ever, regardless of what Charlie Miller might put in the show notes.

Gasp! How dare I blaspheme.

I submit 1974-02-24.

Here Jerry plays the guitar in a coherent and miraculous fashion, and doesn't just hold down the strings and furiously strum.

Oh yea, it comes out of the ashes of a 29 minute Dark Star...

This Dew is fantastic! I haven't listened to it enough but I remember being blown away by the grace of the playing. The final jam is Jerry doing a very nice chord solo but he isn't furiously shredding but instead finessing it ever so sweetly. Oh yeah and the way they drop right back into heavy psychedelia right after the final chord in Dew is breathtaking. You really need the soundboard for 3-23-74 because there is one single individual close to the audience microphone loudly clapping along, off time, for the majority of the suite.

I enjoy the 2-14-68 Dew probably just because I've listened to it so many times but also because Jerry's voice is so nice in the 60's! Also, 5-6-70 is a very powerful version for me, heavy emotion 2 days after Kent State.

The one from February '74 is absolutely incendiary but I think it is a little sloppy as well.

I know there are some really great Morning Dews from after the European tour, especially coming out of Dark Star. Any recommendations?

And that show has (one of) the best ever China/Riders.

Undoubtedly, the best in my book.

How incredible is the transition jam? Just exactly perfect!

Definitely agree that no post-hiatus Dew can be greatest ever - to me, simply because of Jerry's voice. Garcia had such a clean, sweet tone to his singing voice in the 60's and early 70's. While not the "best" singer, he could really belt em out in this honest gentle voice that draws the listener in. Although I love the 80's with Brent and Jerry did have some good nights vocally in the early 80s, the music draws me in more than the singing during this later era.

A great Dew but it doesn't challenge the king. 4/28/71
